How to Convert a Video to GIF (MP4 to GIF)
Turn a short video clip into a looping GIF without uploading it to a conversion server. This guide explains the practical choices that matter: clip length, resolution, frame rate and file size.
When should you use a GIF instead of video?
GIFs are useful when you want a short animation that plays automatically in places where a normal video player would be inconvenient. They work well for quick reactions, simple product demonstrations, UI walkthroughs and short before-and-after clips.
For long clips, detailed footage or anything that needs sound, MP4 or WebM is usually a better choice. Modern video formats compress motion far more efficiently, so a long GIF can become surprisingly large.
1. Choose a short part of the video
Start with the shortest section that communicates the point. A six-second clip at 10 frames per second already needs about 60 frames. Doubling the duration roughly doubles the amount of image data the GIF encoder has to store.

2. Pick a sensible GIF width
A 480-pixel-wide GIF is a useful starting point for most web pages, chats and documentation. Use 320 pixels when file size matters more than detail, and 640 pixels only when the animation genuinely needs the extra resolution.
Remember that increasing both width and height raises the number of pixels in every frame. A modest jump in width can therefore create a much larger file.
3. Choose a frame rate
Frame rate controls how many images are shown each second. Around 8–10 FPS is usually enough for reactions, interface demonstrations and simple motion. Five FPS can work for very small files, while 12–15 FPS looks smoother but increases file size and processing time.
Do not assume that more frames always means a better result. A small GIF that loads quickly is often more useful than a very smooth GIF that takes several seconds to appear.
4. Convert and preview the result
