What gets transferred?The download test uses random test data. The upload test sends temporary random bytes generated in your browser; they are discarded immediately and are not stored as files.

How to use this tool

  1. Pause large downloads and choose whether to test Wi-Fi, Ethernet or your VPN.
  2. Start the speed test and keep the tab visible. The test transfers synthetic data.
  3. Repeat at another time and compare with the same connection type.

What the results mean

Mbps measures transfer rate; it is different from MB/s shown by many downloads. The destination is the MyLaptopTools network edge, so the result may differ from an ISP test or a distant service. A fast download score does not guarantee smooth calls.

Common problems

If Wi-Fi is slow, test nearer the router or with Ethernet. If only one app is slow, check that service separately. A VPN changes the route, so label VPN-on and VPN-off comparisons clearly.

Privacy and data use

Synthetic test bytes are downloaded and uploaded. The upload endpoint receives generated data, not your documents, and does not save it as a file. This test can use significant data on a metered connection.

Why does another speed test show a different result?

Tests differ in destination, transfer duration, concurrency and network route. Browser load and other traffic matter too. Repeat comparable tests instead of judging the line from a single measurement.
