What Is a Good Ping?
Ping is a simple way to describe how quickly a request can travel from your device to a destination and back. Lower is generally better, but distance and network conditions matter.
What ping measures
Ping is commonly expressed in milliseconds (ms). If a test reports 20 ms, a small round trip took roughly twenty thousandths of a second. That delay is called latency.
Bandwidth and latency are different. A connection can download hundreds of megabits per second and still feel sluggish in a game or remote desktop session if latency is high.
What counts as a good ping?
As a rough everyday guide, under 20 ms is excellent, 20–50 ms is very responsive, 50–100 ms is usually usable, and delays above 100 ms become increasingly noticeable in real-time activities. These are practical ranges rather than guarantees.
The destination matters. A server in the same city may give a much lower result than one on another continent, even when your home connection is working perfectly.
Ping for gaming and calls
Competitive games are especially sensitive because every action must reach the game server quickly. Video calls can tolerate more latency, but long delays make conversations feel awkward and increase the chance of people talking over each other.
Use the Ping Test to compare several response-time samples instead of relying on one number. The Internet Speed Test also reports ping alongside download and upload throughput.
Why ping gets high
- A distant server or VPN endpoint
- Busy Wi‑Fi or weak signal
- Network congestion in your home or ISP
- Large uploads or downloads filling the connection
- Mobile or satellite links with naturally longer paths
How to reduce ping
Start close to the router or test with Ethernet. Pause large transfers, try without a VPN, and compare another device. If only one laptop has high latency, local software or wireless hardware may be involved.
If every device has high latency at the same time, record the results at several times of day before contacting your provider.
Do not optimise ping in isolation
A low average ping is good, but consistency matters too. A connection that jumps between 15 ms and 120 ms can feel worse than one that stays around 45 ms.
That variation is called jitter. Run the Ping Test and then the Laptop Check if you want a broader picture of meeting and device readiness.
