JPG vs PNG: Which Image Format Should You Use?

JPG is usually better for photographs and complex images where a smaller file matters. PNG is usually better for sharp graphics, screenshots and transparency. The right format can reduce file size without making the image look worse.

When JPG is the better choice

JPG uses lossy compression, which means it can discard some visual detail to make the file much smaller. That trade-off works particularly well for photographs, gradients and other images with many colours and natural texture.

For website photos, email attachments and social images, a well-compressed JPG can be dramatically smaller than a PNG while looking nearly identical at normal viewing size.

When PNG is the better choice

PNG uses lossless compression and supports transparent pixels. It is a strong choice for logos, interface graphics, diagrams, screenshots with small text and images that need a transparent background.

Why PNG files can be much larger

A detailed photograph contains a huge amount of pixel variation. PNG tries to preserve that detail exactly, while JPG is allowed to approximate it. As a result, converting a photograph from JPG to PNG often increases the file size without improving anything visible.

There is no perfect percentage for every image. Start around a high quality setting and reduce it until you see an unacceptable change. Large photos often tolerate more compression than text-heavy screenshots.
